AJL Music
AJL Music is a nonprofit program dedicated to preparing N.Y. City public school students ages 12 to 21 for careers in music (i.e., composers, arrangers, studio musicians, etc.)
AJL Music is a music conservatory designed to fill the gap between the suburban schools that offer musical training at all levels, and the city students who usually receive only the state-required music courses. AJL Music takes over where the majority of the city schools’ programs leave off.
AJL Music provides opportunities for talented, highly-motivated students who are proficient at their specific instruments, but have limited funds to study on a private level and continue to hone their craft.
The program consists of six key components:
- The construction of music: Theory/Harmony, orchestration, etc.;
- Mentorship: Young musicians will interact with seasoned musicians;
- Songwriting: Characteristics of a hit song.
- Performance skills: Selecting a repertoire, staging, building an image, etc.;
- Musical theatre;
- The business of music.
Students will also have the opportunity to attend live music concerts and Broadway shows, as well as become familiar with "the Great American Songbook" and theatrical"hot numbers".
It is hoped that AJL can someday become a student-run "Brill Building" which includes AJL Songs (music publisher); AJL Records (label). The songwriters will be affiliated with one of the 3 performance Right Societies.
In the long run, AJL Music will enrich the students' lives, and more importantly, bring live music and theatre into their hearts and minds.
Since the inception of AJL, over 200 students have attended workshops and then gone on to achieve success in the music industry. Many school drop-outs were encouraged by AJL to return to high school and college.
About 50% of all AJL students secure internships with record labels, publishing companies, recording studios, television networks and law firms. Several students have commenced their careers with full-time positions with major and independent record labels, while others have developed their own publishing and production companies.
AJL has an active Advisory Board of music industry executives, professional songwriters, producers and educators who develop fundraising ideas.
